With a population of about 115,000, Athens is still a small town with a lot to offer. The University of Georgia has approximately 35,000 students and they are the driving force of Athens. During the summer months when school is out, the city slows down long enough for local business to restock and prepare for the next semester with great anticipation. It's easy to say that most of the small shop owner´s downtown are looking forward to the fall. Not only do the students come back to town, we have a rush of visitors for the University of Georgia football games.
Whether you are a football fan or not, it's hard to not join in with the sea of red and black on game nights. You'll see it all here from tailgating parties, RV's, food, and a great time for friends and family to get together.

The downtown night life is lively, sophisticated and fun. There are many good restaurants and it´s always interesting to hear the favorites of visitors that we meet. Some of our favorites include:
- Square One Fish Company: A newer restaurant next to the Classic Center.
- DePalmas: An excellent Italian restaurant with 3 locations to choose from.
- The Hilltop Grill: A favorite spot away from downtown.
- The Royal Peasant: Great hamburgers and fish n' chips
- The Grit: Vegetarian resaurant
- The Taco Stand: A favorite spot for the younger generations.
- Amici's: Pizza and Italian food
- Farm 255: A great spot with a variety of options. Specials include garden fresh or locally purchased food.
Downtown Athens also has many live entertainment venues where bands such as, REM, B-52's, and Widespread Panic got their start and many great local bands work to follow in their footsteps. It is for this and many more reasons that Athens has been consistently rated as one of the best college towns in the U.S. by magazines like Kiplinger, MSN Travel, and Money. |
