Watkinsville, "Georgia´s Best Kept Secret" Located midst Oconee County only a short distance away from the town of Athens -- Watkinsville, Georgia unfolds a bit of Southern Culture and Sophisticated style along the foothills of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains on the Northeastern side of Georgia.
Oconee County has a population of about 35,000. Since it was such a rural county, public sewer was not installed until about 8 years ago. That has made a big difference in the way the county has developed. Most neighborhoods have at least ¾ acre lots to accommodate septic tank requirements. Most of the newer neighborhoods have developed around the Hwy. 316 side of the county. Many of the residents work at The University of Georgia or commute to Atlanta or Gwinnett County.
Oconee County is an artistic community. There is Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation (OCAF) with many big shows each year, including the Holiday Mart, annual pottery sale, and Southworks. There are also several pottery artists, glass blowers, art galleries, and antique shops in Oconee County. The Eagle Tavern is an old train depot with a couple of rooms for travelers in the early 1900’s. They have much of the original décor and a local farmers market on Saturday mornings in the spring and summer months (9-12am).
In the spring, you can visit Washington’s strawberry patch to pick your own strawberries. Around June or July, the blueberries are ripe at Miller’s Blueberry Farm. It’s not really the Miller’s anymore but the new owner is carrying on the business for the time being. There are several independent garden shops with some nice plants – Thomas Peach Orchard has peaches for sale but some unique plants for sale too. Piccadilly Farms has lots to offer and it’s a pretty place to visit. There is also Outdoor Specialties. They sell more to the wholesale industry but will sell to the public.
Oconee County schools are some of the best in the state. There are 4 or 5 elementary schools, 2 middle schools and 2 high schools. Private schools Athens Academy and Westminster Academy are in Oconee County.
