Five Points has a good variety of restaurants, shopping, wine and coffee shops. Barberito’s is a good option for lunch with a wide variety of burritos. They have several locations around Athens and have expanded to other cities as well. Aroma’s is a wine and coffee shop with sandwiches and appetizers. Hodgson’s Pharmacy is known for their ice cream bar as well as being a long time local pharmacy. I think you can still get ice cream for 50 cents a scoop! And Jittery Joe’s first location was on the corner gas station but recently moved two doors down. They have locations around Athens and their coffee is sold in several local restaurants and shops.
Lumpkin Street in Five Points
On Lumpkin Street, you’ll find one of the best known restaurants in Athens, Five & Ten. They are in the process of building out a new space on Milledge, just across from the fire station. One of my favorite spots is Earth Fare, an organic food supermarket. They have a salad, hot food and soup bar plus great smoothies made fresh to order. There is a deli with pre-made items They stock lots of locally grown vegetables and pride themselves on selling healthy foods. Heading toward downtown on Lumpkin is another local favorite restaurant, Cali n Tito’s. They have Cuban sandwiches, fish tacos and many other options. Most of the seating is outdoors.
Five Points Bottle Shop which has one of Athens’ largest selection of wine and specialty beers, is next to Earth Fare. The Royal Peasant is a local pub with good food. They have different specials every night, including corn beef and cabbage on Monday. Sheppards pie, fish and chips, salads and hamburgers are also on the menu.
Five Points is also one of the most desirable locations in Athens. There are many historic homes and with this central shopping area, it’s one of the few areas in Athens where you can walk to restaurants and local shops.
