Athens, GA built its reputation on two things: music and football. (Higher education? Okay, maybe three things.) And because of the low cost of living and high population of folks more eager to dine out than cook in, dining in Athens has always been a pleasure.
But, a few stellar spots aside, it’s usually meant compromising when it comes to atmosphere or, especially, service. A lot has changed in Athens recently. Maybe that’s because chefs and monologists are the “new rock stars,” as we’ve all heard ad infinitum. Or maybe that’s just because the recession convinced a lot of people that hey, if the economy’s gonna be unreliable, you might as well live and work somewhere you actually like.
So if you haven’t made it to Athens recently, or if your only thoughts of the city are of cheap beer and hazy memories (be they sporting or rock ‘n’ rolling), it’s time to head east. These spots will make your trip worthwhile.
