There are several options for healthy food sources in Athens. Kroger has continued to add more organic vegetables and fruits, and Publix has the hormone free meat section. Our favorite place to shop is Earth Fare. You can trust that anything in the store is as natural as possible, with no hormones, no high fructose corn syrup, and no artificial sweeteners. I know there is a lot more to it, but I’m just happy that they watch for the ingredients that are not good for us, and just don’t sell them!
After a visit to the dermatologist to treat a reaction to makeup, I have been a lot more careful about the products I use. On their website, Earth Fare states that they don’t sell products with certain ingredients that are known to be undesirable.
We also have Daily Groceries Co-op, a great neighborhood store with lots of local foods. It’s across town for me, so not as convenient, but it’s a favorite for downtown and north side communities. There is also Trader Joes, Aldi’s, and Fresh Market in Athens. There are a few local grocery stores, plus several Farmer’s Markets on Saturday mornings from spring thru fall.
Over the past few months, we’ve been shopping at Kroger more. They have a very good selection of fruits and vegetables, and a good selection of frozen items. And, with the Kroger Plus card, I was able to buy gas at a Kroger station for $1.69 a gallon!
While visiting our family just below Savannah, in Darien, GA we went by a local marina seafood shop and bought 10 pounds of shrimp. I wish we got more, since the price was a lot less than we pay here, but we can go back for more when we need it! and even better than the price, the shrimp is delicious!
