Oconee County, ranked as one of the top three healthiest counties in Georgia by the Wisconsin Population Health Institute, has a wonderful location and top rated schools in the state.
Progressive Farmer Magazine names the county number two on their list of the “best” areas in the country stating, “Close to Athens and Atlanta, many residents commute to jobs but enjoy Oconee’s agriculture in beef cattle and pine forests, as well as the low pollution, low crime, and excellent schools. The SAT scores are Georgia’s best.”
The Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation (OCAF), located in Historic Watkinsville, is a non-profit that offers art education as well as art exhibits open to the public. The Foundation hosts many art classes, workshops and events including the Annual Fall Wine Fest where guests enjoy local restaurants, wineries, bottle shops and a brewery. The calendar is always full with classes ranging from drawing, writing, acting, pottery classes and includes many one-time events.
Each year the Southworks Artists’ Market hosts eighty of the region’s top arts and crafts persons to sell their original works. Also located in Historic Downtown Watkinsville is the Oconee Chamber Fall Festival.
This arts and crafts event boasts over 200 booths and 30,000 attendees. Sure to be a great time for the whole family, the event includes musical entertainment, free admission, free parking, free hayrides, and a multidimensional KidZone! Nature lovers enjoy Oconee County’s nature trails at Heritage Park. There are hiking trails at the nearby State Botanical Garden as well as bike riding along the country roads.
