Oglethorpe County Homes For Sale
The largest county in Northeast Georgia, Oglethorpe County is an area with vast outdoor recreational possibilities. Home of the Watson Mill Covered Bridge State Park, the Broad River, and the Oconee National Forest, the area has prime white water rafting, sportsman hunting including seasonal Whitetail Deer, Turkey, and Rabbit, and even an ATV and Motor Bike Park.
The county is about 70 miles from Atlanta and next door to Athens-Clarke County. It boasts a variety of landscapes including natural woodlands, pine forests, pastures, and well-maintained country roads connecting small rural communities.
Since 1977, the Lexington Historic District has been been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The district which encompasses the majority of the town includes a historic courthouse and several antique shops with loads of unique treasures. Goodness Grows Nursery and Perennial Garden is a must see.
The area is such a picturesque demonstration of country living, even country music star Kenny Rogers could not resist living in Oglethorpe County for a while. His estate, known as Beaverdam Farms, was featured on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous and was eventually sold for around 20 million dollars.
The county has also been home to many leaders including Georgia Governors, U.S. Senators, U.S. Representatives and Georgia Supreme Court Justices. Even Meriwether Lewis, leader of the Lewis and Clarke Expedition, resided in Oglethorpe County. With such a rich historical background, residents cannot help but find themselves deeply rooted in their dignified past.
