Some of our favorite features of the area include the active arts community – events in Oconee County at OCAF include Southworks, Holiday Festival, and the annual pottery show. Athens events include art shows at the Lyndon House and many downtown festivals throughout the year.
The music scene in Athens is world known and not just for the younger crowd. We’ve recently seen Dwight Yoakham and Keb Mo at the Georgia Theatre. John Prine has been in Athens several times, most recently at the Classic Center a couple of years ago. There are many famous musicians playing at various venues around town, plus nightly entertainment at local restaurants and bars. and the Classic Center is a great spot for many events such as Blue Man Group, Elf – the Broadway musical, The Nutcracker, and many other classic events.
Some of our favorite restaurants include The National, South Kitchen, The Globe, Thai Spoon, Royal Peasant, Mama’s Boy, Tlaloc, DePalma’s and Cali n Titos. There is never a shortage of good restaurants in Athens. For local farmers markets, there are options throughout the week during the spring-fall, in downtown Athens, downtown Watkinsville, UGArdens, Locally Grown (place orders online and pick up at specified time), and in Bishop.
More reasons Athens made it to the top 25 places to retire list is the various options for shopping, especially at the new shopping center on Epps Bridge Road, Epps Bridge Centre. Beechwood shopping center on Alps Road has several options including Talbots, Coldwater Creek, Steinmart and TJ Maxx. Daily Grocery, Earth Fare, Trader Joes, and Fresh Market offer lots of variety in grocery choices.
If you are interested in outdoor activities, Athens is only an hour from Lake Hartwell or Lake Oconee, and about 2 hours to the north Georgia mountains. The mild climate in Athens allows for activities year round. The State Botanical Garden on Milledge has a variety of things to do. There is a hummingbird trail, walking trails along the river, beautiful plants, classrooms — something for everyone!
One of the main draws to Athens is the University of Georgia. With the new medical college and teaching veterinary hospital, Athens will continue to make it on future lists of the TOP places to be.
